New Tunes Tuesday: Part 3

Ali Gilbert.

New to the scene, Gilbert is opening doors with his debut single ‘Lose Myself’ After losing himself to the pleasures of lockdown, Gilbert found himself stuck for inspiration. During June of 2020, he made (the correct) decision to watch the BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney's outstanding book ‘Normal People’.

If you arent familiar with the story, I’ll fill you in. It follows the lives of Marianne and Connell as they stumble (rather fall, tragically) through high school and college. Finding themselves and each other with twists and turns that grip you from beginning to end (highly recommend).

After watching the show, Gilbert found inspiration as it was ‘powerful and relatable’. ‘Lose Myself’ discusses the hardships of loving yourself and loving someone else. Gilbert quickly found his sound in ‘Lose Myself’ keeping the drums, bass and guitar simple to allow his smooth vocals to shine with powerful lyrics.

With the success of ‘Lose Myself’, GIlbert is making big moves in 2021. With gigs lined up such as his 1st gig at Deadwax Digbeth on 08/01/21 and then playing the O2 Academy 3 Birmingham in April. Date still to be confirmed to get yourself over to his Instagram for updates!!

Taking great inspiration from his overly talented family (Grandfather & Uncle) Gilbert also has a great interest in the likes of Sam Fender, Paolo Nutini and The 1975. When asked if he could see anyone live, past or present, Gilbert mentioned the nation's favourites including Eric Clapton.

Dakota.

An English singer/songwriter band formed in 2019. Working with the environment around them, Dakota creates music that ‘transports people through music and create a magical

soundscape for people to feel encapsulated by’.

On December 11th, Dakota are releasing their latest single ‘Flaneur’. The French translation for ‘wanderer’. Dakota wrote their single to capture the happenings of people/ objects around them. There are things which happen around us every day that we, by no fault of our own, miss. ‘Flaneur’ embodies everything we miss.

With cinematic lyricism, ‘Flaneur’ is one for calming the heart, soul and mind.

After the successful release of ‘Too Comfortable’ back in early 2019, Dakota are expecting the same buzz. Using soft, husky vocals, tantalizing piano and charming harmonies to finish ‘Flaneur’ is sure to have you all falling in love with the world around you.

‘...sometimes you gotta have your own back’

Stream on December 11th!

Apple Shakers.

Alt-Indie duo Apple Shakers are making some noise in the London music scene. Taking elements of psychedelic rock and punk to create a heavy electric guitar sound. Zurich and East London lads have come together to produce a ground-shaking duo.

Having 3 successful singles, Apple Shaker's aren't afraid to mix up their sound. ‘Change You’ takes on a more reggae vibe with a deep, funky bassline. Incorporating various forms of rock including classic rock elements.

The most successful of the singles ‘Ambition Condition’ is the truest to the lads' backgrounds. A mix of Kasabian and Jamie T (i said what I said) Apple Shakers are doing themselves proud.

Listening to Apple Shakers, you would never guess it's just the 2 of them.

Don't believe me? Check out their live performance of ‘Walking’ link below!
